It appears to have a clogged drain.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You&#8217;re feeling the pain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Wow. In just moments you&#8217;ve just moved directly from <a href=\"http:\/\/fishingforcustomers.blogspot.com\/2008\/04\/marketing-pain-part-3-first-stage.html\">Pain Stage 1<\/a> (no pain, no need for services) to Pain Stage 4 (make it stop hurting, NOW!).<\/p>\n<p>Screaming &#8220;<em>I&#8217;ll get the mop. <\/em><em>You grab the Yellow Pages,<\/em>&#8221; you address the immediate standing water problem as your husband\/wife\/roommate opens the book to &#8220;plumbers&#8221; and sees this ad:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_qTt_gj6fGGk\/SCJqI3JwSFI\/AAAAAAAAAIg\/MpFDFmPl_ho\/s1600-h\/TRJohnson.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5197833620415334482\" style=\"margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_qTt_gj6fGGk\/SCJqI3JwSFI\/AAAAAAAAAIg\/MpFDFmPl_ho\/s400\/TRJohnson.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nScanning to the adjacent page, this ad leaps into consciousness:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_qTt_gj6fGGk\/SCJrA3JwSHI\/AAAAAAAAAIw\/m4slMVL3vJ8\/s1600-h\/PhillipSJohnson.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5197834582488008818\" style=\"margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_qTt_gj6fGGk\/SCJrA3JwSHI\/AAAAAAAAAIw\/m4slMVL3vJ8\/s400\/PhillipSJohnson.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nIs there a difference between T.R. Johnson &amp; Son&#8217;s ad, and that of Phillip S. Johnson Plumbing Co.?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pretty obvious, isn&#8217;t it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first company seems to think their name is the most important information the customer needs. The second focuses on the customer&#8217;s emergent need.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"fullpost\">They may not be fighting an emergency, b<\/span><span class=\"fullpost\">ut by the time they&#8217;ve consulted the Yellow Pages, people are ready to buy. They&#8217;re fed up with suffering. They&#8217;ve concluded that they suffer from not owning what you sell.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>If these people have been influenced by your earlier advertising, they may look you up by name. If not, they&#8217;ll search through the listings for someone who can solve their problem, and solve it now.<\/p>\n<p>You won&#8217;t impress anyone as a problem solver if the headline of your ad is the name of your business, and that&#8217;s followed by a listing of brand names and services you offer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stage 4 Messaging<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to the folks at the <a href=\"https:\/\/heysimpletree.com\/residential-solar-leads-program\/\">solar marketing agency<\/a>, a lot of advertising consists of the very common &#8220;<em>We&#8217;re wonderful. We&#8217;re the best<\/em>&#8221; kind of chest thumping one would expect from car dealers or personal injury attorneys. Among those businesses which sell services, &#8220;<em>We&#8217;ve been in business for 70 years<\/em>,&#8221; is an all too typical statement.<\/p>\n<p>But, if it was your sink is running over, would you care how long anyone&#8217;s been in business?<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"fullpost\">A much more salient message to a prospective customer at <\/span><span class=\"fullpost\">Pain Stage 4, is &#8220;<em>Stop hurting, now<\/em>.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Stage 4 pain isn&#8217;t limited to emergencies. What if your sink isn&#8217;t running over, but its not draining properly either?<\/p>\n<p>You still need a plumber. What&#8217;s the headline you&#8217;ll look for?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Your pain is likely to be . . .<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>. . . that you&#8217;ll need to take time off work.<\/p>\n<p>More specifically, it&#8217;s trying to schedule your day when you don&#8217;t know exactly when the plumber will show up.<\/p>\n<p>That pain, time deprivation, is addressed by this * plumber:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_qTt_gj6fGGk\/SCJDbnJwSEI\/AAAAAAAAAIY\/_VSegXbhJn0\/s1600-h\/Plumbing.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5197791061584398402\" style=\"margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_qTt_gj6fGGk\/SCJDbnJwSEI\/AAAAAAAAAIY\/_VSegXbhJn0\/s400\/Plumbing.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nCompare TV Plumbing&#8217;s ad with that of T.R. Johnson &amp; Son.<\/p>\n<p>Which one would you call, if you needed to take time off work in order to make that call?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pain Stage 4 occurs every time someone needs a solution NOW!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Stage 4 ads aren&#8217;t limited to Yellow Pages ads. There can be times in which a Stage 4 message works well to build your brand awareness in a Stage 1 medium.
