\u201cSo, you\u2019re not going to make a Friday delivery<\/em>,\u201d I asked? Robbie said \u201cI told you, I\u2019ll try<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut that wasn\u2019t the question, was it?\u201d <\/em>I pointed out. \u201cThe question was, \u2018Will you deliver the artwork by Friday.\u2019 I’m not asking for effort. I’m asking for commitment. You have refused to make the commitment. I’m interpreting your answer as \u2018No.\u2019\u201d <\/em> <\/p>\n

As you might imagine, Robbie doesn\u2019t get any of my business.<\/p>\n

Are you a supplier of goods or services? Do you deliver when you say you will? Is your word a binding commitment?<\/p>\n

It\u2019s just you and me, here. You can be honest.<\/p>\n

Your customers don\u2019t care about the difficulties that have popped up in your life, or your business. They don\u2019t want to know about unplanned urgent distractions. They don\u2019t want to know that your suppliers are backordered. They just want you to deliver on time<\/a>.<\/p>\n

My partner, Roy Williams, often asks \u201cWhy do customers not come to your store<\/em><\/a>? Is it because they don\u2019t know about you? Is it because they do know about you?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

My friend and former boss, Rick Dames, says: \u201cIt\u2019s so simple. Just do what you say you\u2019re going to do<\/em>.\u201d <\/p>\n

It IS<\/b> simple. Not necessarily easy, but simple.<\/p>\n

Is your word a binding commitment?<\/p>\n

If your answer is \u201cYes,\u201d consider making that willingness to commit part of your marketing strategy.<\/p>\n

But if your answer is \u201cNo,\u201d understand that advertising won\u2019t help your business.<\/p>\n

Oh, advertising may get you some new short-term customers. But when you disappoint them, the collective negative word of mouth<\/a> is going to outweigh any positive impressions left by your advertising.<\/p>\n

So, what\u2019s it going to be?<\/p>\n

Is your word a binding commitment?<\/p>\n

Will you deliver by Friday?<\/p>\n
